steel-cut oats

i'm currently nursing a very mild stomach flu (which i've never had before). so for two days now, i've only been eating crackers and chicken broth. today is the third day and i was told i can eat oatmeal.

i've always wondered about the oatmeal served at good restaurants. they're not the usual mushy, watery, instant Quaker-oats type. instead, they're made with whole oats where you can actually see each individual oats and they're cooked al dente.

since I never really liked Quaker instant oatmeal -- unless we're snowed in and there's nothing left to eat and even at that, i still refuse to eat it -- i've been using steel-cut oats. one famous brand is McCann's Irish oatmeal. i've been using McCann's for quite a while now. in fact, i used their instant kind when the 5-year old was just beginning to eat solid food. their instant kind is really good. Quaker oats is nothing compared to it.

anyway, i made their steel-cut oats oatmeal from scratch this morning. didn't realize it takes close to an hour to make it. oh well, it was really good and worth it.

Hi Purplegirl, I came here via Marie's site. I just met her again in Manila, this time with Girlie, last week. I'm back home in California and will try this oatmeal brand.

Glad to see you feeling better! I got hooked on steel-cut oats after watching Alton Brown's episode on making oatmeal. If you hate the cruddy instant stuff before, you will love seeing what he does with the real thing.

This is good comfort food. Hope it helped you. You can soak the oats overnight to help them quick faster -- but it takes some forethought.

Hi Purplegirl,

This is my first time in your blog. Referred through PMN. I hope you are better now. There is an "Old Fashioned" Quaker oats and it takes 5 minutes to prepare. It doesn't become a mush unlike the instant kind. With the Irish Oats, you can prepare it using the slow cooker at night so it'll be ready in the morning. Check out FoodTv.com and Alton Brown has a recipe.

Hi Everyone! I'm from McCann's, and we are all really glad that you like our product. I completely understand the desire for a quick breakfast in the morning. The soaking method is a great one. Another method of speeding up steel cut cooking is the rice cooking method, for details & a few more speedy methods, check out http://www.mccanns.ie/preparation.html
